Cate Cahill is a witch, as are her two younger sisters, Maura and Tess. Unfortunately, it's a bad time to be a witch in Cate's place and time, with the Brotherhood (the priests who run the town) on the lookout for any girls who even seem like they might be witches. Cate made a promise to her mother, while her mother was dying, that she would look after her sisters and make sure nothing happened to them. That promise is getting harder and harder to keep as her sisters rebel against Cate's rules to not use magic and the Brotherhood gets increasingly aggressive about locking up girls who are the slightest bit different on suspicion of witchery. To complicate matters further, Cate is nearing the age when she will be expected to announce either her betrothal or her intention to join the Sisterhood, the sister organization of the Brotherhood which requires vows of chastity and humble service for life. Cate is interested in neither prospect. What she desires most is to stay at home and continue watching over her sisters. The Cahill sisters already have a reputation as eccentric and antisocial. When a nosy neighbor intervenes and talks their father into hiring a governess from the Sisterhood to guide the girls into proper behavior, Cate is sure their secrets will come out and they will all be in grave danger. What Cate doesn't know, is that this governess has secrets of her own, and her and her sisters' lives are in much more danger than she ever thought possible.

Born Wicked was a very enjoyable read. The danger and excitement are present pretty much from the beginning of the book to the end, making it a real page-turner. I read it in just two days. Cate is a great heroine. She's brave, loyal, and likeable, but human at the same time. Fiercely protective of her sisters, it's hard not to admire all she is willing to sacrifice to keep them safe. I thought all the characters were well-developed, especially Cate's sisters. The arguments and strife between them seem so true to life, despite the fact that they are very different from your average girls. I loved Finn, and I thought the way the relationship between he and Cate developed was both romantic and realistic. I was easily drawn into the story and felt like I was right there with Cate, experiencing her thoughts and feelings right along with her. I highly recommend Born Wicked. It has been on my TBR list for a long time and I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I've already started the next book in the series, Star Cursed, and I'm loving it just as much! I usually write my reviews right after I've finished reading a book and before I start another one, but Born Wicked ended in a cliffhanger, and I just couldn't wait. Born Wicked is a great start to what looks like a great trilogy. Five stars.

this series ended up taking me by surprise. I started it just because witch stories can be fun and or cool. maybe even deep. The three books here wound up being all three. And I'm sure, even more than I'm stating here. I think,based on my non-existent education, it is written very well and that it was planned out very well. This was a really good series in the "witches" genre. not just fun, not just witchcraft, not just a horror story - but really all of it and more. i don't know how much "historical" approach was used, and I am not a literature professor(or even a student) I just like to read and these books were truly enjoyable. I don't even know why it would be Young Adult. It is maybe not for kids - though I don't recall a single swear word utilized- but written for a certain level of maturity "at least" but certainly not limited. Bottom line here is read them, if you're interested, read them. They're more about the characters than "evil spells and rituals" but they wouldn't be nearly as good if they weren't.

***SPOILER ALERT*****
Some reviews said the ending was predictable - well, she spelled it out for us - almost. When I got to the end , after forming the same opinions as many others I'm sure, It was still emotional. I think that's why. Being so sure in my heart, I continued through the series expecting exactly that. The two have to survive, it has to be the other one - right? But when it unfolded , we are forced to face our opinions, decisions and attitudes just like Cate. I don't know about you , but I kinda felt like Sh*t. Well played J.Spotswood.
