Covers the latest versions of CICS (including CICS Transaction Server) so that beginners can learn current coding practices from the start. Six beginning chapters show how to develop CICS programs, and later chapters present CICS commands and techniques used regularly, commands and techniques for file and database processing, and code necessary for maintaining older programs. Twelve programs and dozens of coding segments illustrate design and coding practices. All content is presented in paired pages, with illustrations and crucial coding details for a single feature or function on the right, and explanations and perspectives on the left. Annotation c. Murach CICS for the COBOL Programmer 9781890774097 Computer Science Books Reviews

  • I have worked with mainframe for more than 15 years, also with Batch COBOL but never had a chance to work with CICS Cobol. I have bought this book with the expectation to have an idea about what it is and to be able to study it by myself hoping to have a chance to start working with it if an opportunity arises. So far I have read the first 9 chapters and I can say it is so well written that it's easy to follow and understand. The examples are very clear and everything is explained as if you were at the University or taking a course in a workshop.
Murach's series have found out a very friendly and clever way to teach things. I have read some other of their books like Murach's Mainframe COBOL, and Murach’s OS390 and zOS JCL, and I feel lucky I've found them. I strongly recomend this and the rest of their mainframe books.
I have a feeling that it should be the same with their web books.
  • Need to know about CICS COBOL programming? This is the book. Great reference.
  • Any book by Mike Murach is a good buy.
  • This book takes up a lot of space with COBOL CICS code. if you are new to programming this is not bad but someone with more experience might find all these examples tedious especially when you just want to get to the point and get there quickly. Not to say the book is bad it is an excellent book with plenty of clear example, just for someone with my experience 15+ years it is a little timid.
  • This book appears to be targeted to those who can barely spell CICS and have been coding COBOL for no more than a few years. It has a feel of being very, very basic. Not quite condescending but they assume you know nothing, which I guess is the safest way to write a book like this. I only wish they had gotten into a bit more detail about some of the slightly more advanced functions. My background is in macro level CICS and I wanted to learn how to code the same functions in command level. Not all I had hoped for was covered in this book. If you really know nothing about CICS, then this will probably prove a very helpful book. If you have been programming for years, as I have, and need to finally get up to speed on command level, prepare to slog through a bunch of stuff you already know about programming to get to the few bits and pieces of CICS specific knowledge.
  • Good book for us old school mainframers. I keep this book with me at all times at work, but Google kind of makes books obsolete anymore.
  • This is an excellent text for beginning CICS programmers and experienced COBOL/CICS programmers. It covers the basics in an easily understandable manner and does not assume a level of knowledge that leaves the new programmer wondering what he missed. The examples provide a good start to learing by doing. I bought the book to update my programming library and found it a good review and reference
