“Written from the heart and without restraint, alive.”—The New York Times
Vincent van Gogh, the great but tormented artist, bared his tortured yet ecstatic soul in his letters to his confidant and companion, his beloved brother Theo. These letters reveal the man behind such masterpieces as The Starry Night and The Bedroom—a desperate man whose quest for love became a flight into madness and for whom every day was a “fight for life.”
Irving Stone, acclaimed author of Lust for Life and other remarkable biographic novels, has collected Vincent van Gogh’s fascinating letters to Theo. Here we see the great artist as a human being as well as a man with an appointment with destiny. Van Gogh is a man struggling with doubts and fears, beset by poverty and mental illness, but also a painter who dares to break all the rules of academic art to create priceless masterpieces never honored during his lifetime. He was part of the coterie of great artists of his day while as the same time an intimate of aging streetwalkers. These letters are outpourings of his soul that paint a vibrant self-portrait in words equal to the intensity and emotion his painting created. This is the personal story of a legend.

"It is a lovely book. Not one I read cover to cover - no need, they are letters - not a story. The letters combined do tell a story so I will pick up and read on occasion to understand the changes The Artist was going through."

- It is a lovely book. Not one I read cover to cover - no need, they are letters - not a story. The letters combined do tell a story so I will pick up and read on occasion to understand the changes The Artist was going through.
- Vincent's letter is of course 5 stars. This edition by A PLUME BOOK is disgraceful. I's not a paperback. It's a mass market paperback. The printing and paper quality are worse than those of a newspaper. If you love Van Gogh's letter, it's free online. If you enjoy reading on paper, get a different edition.
- I could not put the book down. The editing could have been a lot better when it came to when Van Gogh wrote each letter to his brother. I enjoyed googling the names of artists that were Van Gogh's favorites and learning about their styles that inspired him.
- It is not as easy a read as Stone's van Gog biography Lust For Life, but for fans, it's a deep book.
Vincent tells of how he went into the fields to paint, and then a rain storm came. He sought meager shelter behind a big tree while it lasted, and then resumed. And because he had started with a low vantage point, he now had to stand on his knees in the mud! He seems to merely mention this to point out why he considers common workman's clothes to be the artist's best friend...
He also tells how he went out to paint the sea, in a storm so strong he could barely stay on his feet. One painting got so full of sand from the beach that he went to a nearby inn and retouched it... and then went back out into the storm to finish it with fresh impressions!
Today, most of us "Go out with the camera today? Nah, it's a bit nippy, and I just got the Sopranos on DVD..."
Irving Stone edited Dear Theo, and while he may have done a good job generally, I think it was a disservice to the material to not indicate where he cut it. It is just one long text, no dates and no indication where each quote starts or ends. - This is a wonderful book of letters that Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo between the years 1873 and 1890. They had been found by Theo's wife after his passing - which was only 6 months after Van Gogh's death. He was as much a philosopher as he was a painter. In a sense thro these letters he is telling us the story of his own life. Bringing to us his sense of beauty and the understanding of the people he met, and places he lived. He has a way with words, once you get used to the older style you find yourself being drawn in. It is not a book to read quickly in one sitting as I found myself sitting back every once in a while to ponder what I had just read - I think you will too. It does make me miss the art of letter writing in this day and age of facebook and twitter.
- The paper quality of this book is very poor, and affected the prints in half of the book- making the prints blurred and hard to read! So much so that I thought I was having problems with my eye, and asked others with good eyesight to check the book! They also confirmed that it was the paper and prints!!
- I got the audio version and found it easier to listen to than to read the letters. you can listen to a sample on this page.
- The edges were a little bent and I'm not sure if it's this company or all publishing of this book, but the text is thick And some looks kind of smeared on almost every other page. Is still readable but I just wasn't expecting that I guess. Anyway, good book. A nice read he lived an intriguing and sad life
