Dr. Patti Feuereisen has been working with teenage girls for twenty-five years and has been a pioneer in helping abused girls find their voices. What she discovered in listening to hundreds of girls was not only that sexual abuse of young girls is in fact epidemic, but if the abuse can be processed when girls are still young—in their teens and early twenties—remarkable healing can take place. Girls and young women who are given an opportunity to speak out will most often go on to thrive as adults; without such an opportunity the traumatic effects of their abuse will often continue to cause them difficulty long into adulthood.

Invisible Girls weaves together powerful first-person narratives with gentle guidance and seasoned insights to help girls through the maze of feelings that swirl around the abuse experience. This gives every young woman who struggles with the scars of sexual abuse the courage that comes from knowing that she is not alone, while other girls come out from behind the veil of secrecy to become vibrant, healthy, and whole.

"The stories in this book are so moving - it's hard to imagine that this kind of sexual abuse goes on, but it does and it needs to be discussed. Anyone who's ever experienced anything like this can read this book and find that there's hope and know that they can heal from the pain they've experienced. I would give this to anyone who's ever been sexually abused and anyone who wants to understand more about incest, date rape, etc. It's an important discussion that needs to be opened up - and maybe by talking about it, by it not being such a taboo subject, maybe the cycle of sexual abuse can be ended.
I think it's a really well written and very helpful and hopeful book. Thanks, Dr. Patti!"

Invisible Girls The Truth About Sexual AbuseA Book for Teen Girls Young Women and Everyone Who Cares About Them Patti Feuereisen Caroline Pincus Books Reviews

  • Thank you Dr. Patti for writing this book. You truly have a compassion for the girls and the hurt they have endured. So many times you touched my heart. This book is SO helpful for me as I am getting a Rape and Sexual Violence center started. The location I have found is very near a high school. The stories and information are a wonderful aid. It is so sad that these issues face us daily, and that all of us as women, and especially young girls experience this horror. It leaves me speechless. If something like this ever happened to a daughter of mine or my sister, I don't know what I would do. This is a wonderfully informative book, and while it is difficult to read because of what it is about, the stories the girls share, along with your comments and insight, make this a MUST READ book. Every teenage girl and young woman needs to read this book. I will have this book available at my center, and recommend that every girl read this book. The single most important statement made is "It is NEVER your fault." Girls, always remember that.
  • There is so much honesty and courage in these young women’s stories and so much important and relevant information in Dr Patti’s commentary, I believe anyone regardless of gender or life experience can find inspiration and solace in it.
  • So much is misundertood about sexual abuse - why and how it happens, the ramifications of it, etc. This book does a great job of parsing it all out. If you were abused or know someone who was, please read.
  • As the sub-title says this book is for; '...teen girls, young women, and everyone who care about them.' My family and I fall into the category of; '...and everyone who care about them.' I knew all too well the statistics of sexual abuse after a long career in law enforcement. The book is succinct, informative, and powerful. It gives the reader a much greater insight into the depth of trauma experienced by the survivors of sexual abuse. In my second career, I, with my family, and the support of many others who cared, became directly involved in helping a survivor put an end to the abuse and weather the aftershocks. . This book helped to answer questions we had that may have been too much for the survivor, and give us greater understanding of the emotional roller-coaster the survivor was, is, and will be riding. The book should be required reading for all law enforcement agents who deal with survivors, and everyone else in a profession that may bring him or her into contact with a survivor.

  • Actually, I don't know another book to compare with Dr. Patti Feuereisen's "Invisible Girls." While she has a history of working with "at risk" girls, she also works individually with a range of teenage girls from diverse backgrounds. Her knowledge of the lives of many teenagers who have been in or are currently in sad and/or dangerous situations, and her empathy for her patients, are clear in the stories she relates in her book. Dr. Feuereisen is the featured speaker at many conferences because of the depth of her knowledge and the breadth of her experiences.
  • This book is incredible. If you or any girl you know has suffered sexual abuse, or if you know of a friend, parent, spouse or boyfriend who needs to understand the effects this has on a woman, this is the book. But mainly--it's a book that will affirm girls, reassure them, and lead them in the direction of healing when they have been violated by someone, whether recently or long ago, by a stranger, family member, or acquaintance.
  • Invisible Girls, by Dr. Patti Feuereisen, is a book that was written for and with the input of young women who are survivors of sexual abuse and incest. In its third edition, written as sexual abuse and exploitation of women are being talked about more openly across this country and the world, it has much expanded resources, more in depth exploration of incest and once again, allows survivors to speak, to be heard, to be understood and to find community. In a warm, comfortable manner, Dr. Patti talks honestly about a subject which is often ignored and taboo. Her in-depth knowledge of the struggles and amazing resilience of survivors, practical advice and clear message that sexual abuse is never the fault of the victim provide a backdrop to the deeply moving and courageous stories of the girls who willingly share their experiences. As a psychologist, this is a book I give to women of all ages and cultures who are survivors of and healing from sexual abuse so they feel validated, understood and less alone.
